Keller Rohrback Investigates the Recall of 625,000 Hyundai and Kia Vehicles
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), Hyundai is recalling 120,000 SUVs, and Kia is recalling 505,652 vehicles. The vehicles suffer from serious problems. “We understand that consumers consider their vehicle choices very carefully and are disappointed to learn that not only are their vehicles faulty, but even if they can someday be repaired, they may be worth less given the nature of these alleged defects,” said Keller Rohrback attorney Gretchen Freeman Cappio, a longtime advocate for car consumers.
- Over 375,000 2012-2016 model year Kia Souls are being recalled after years of investigations by US safety regulators. Authorities have confirmed that damage from abnormal engine temperatures can hurt integral engine components—damage that can result in fires during normal vehicle operations.
- 120,000 Hyundai Tucson SUVs from model years 2011 to 2013. NHTSA states that because of a potentially improper seal during engine production, an oil leak could develop and lead to engine damage, the engine stalling, or even a fire.
- Over 94,000 Kia Sedona minivans from model years 2015 to 2018. For models with a manually operated front passenger seat (which means it lacks a powered seat), a wiring harness for the system detecting the weight of the passenger can break if the seat is used frequently. NHTSA asserts that could allow the airbag to deploy in a crash even when a child is sitting there, who fails to weigh enough to activate an airbag, potentially causing injury.
- Over 30,000 Kia Sportage SUVs from the 2011 to 2012 model years. NHTSA reports the oil pan may have been improperly sealed during engine production. As a result, an oil leak could develop and lead to engine damage, the engine stalling, or even a fire.
Keller Rohrback is investigating these potential hazards, defects, and recalls, and how these issues may affect consumers who own or lease any affected Hyundai and Kia vehicles. “Hyundai has previously repaired cars with similar defects, only to have the problems recur because the replacement parts suffered from the same defects. Consumers have reason to worry that just recalling and repairing these vehicles may not solve these serious problems,” said Keller Rohrback attorney Ryan McDevitt.
