Drivers say Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep Headrests Are Spontaneously Deploying and Causing Injuries

A safety feature in certain Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep vehicles, including the popular Dodge Caravan, may be turning into a safety hazard for drivers and passengers and costing owners money.

The Active Head Restraint (AHR) system is designed to protect passengers from neck injuries by restraining their heads during a rear-end collision. But numerous owners report that their AHR system is malfunctioning during normal driving circumstances causing significant injuries, including concussions, by smacking passengers in the back of the head. As a result of the defect, many of these owners have had to pay out of pocket to repair or replace the system after it deploys.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has received dozens of complaints from consumers about spontaneous AHR deployments in these vehicles. One person wrote: “The Active Head Restraint (headrest) of my Jeep deployed while driving down the highway causing me to swerve into the other lane . . . .” These spontaneous deployments may be attributable to defects in the design and manufacture of the AHR system.

If you own one of the vehicles listed below and have experienced a spontaneous AHR deployment, have paid out of pocket to repair or replace an AHR-equipped headrest, or are concerned about the safety of your vehicle and your passengers, the consumer advocates at Keller Rohrback would like to speak with you.
